Now that the gifts are wrapped, the tree is trimmed. the lights are twinkling, and the mistletoe is hung, I plan on getting back to work listing more trading cards and memorabilia at the store. I was totally blown out of the water on my postseason picks! How about you? Admittedly, my heart was governing my choices, but who would have thought the Texas Rangers would look so lively in the playoffs? And then move on to look so lack-luster in the World Series! I am definitely chuckling, (good-naturedly, of course). It’s not over yet, however! Can they make a home-field come-back? I think not, but I can hardly wait to find out.

So let’s toss out another baseball question,

I’m still enjoying watching baseball into October, however, and hope that you are, too. Who are you rooting for? Yes, yes, I am wearing that Yankee hat now.

So, without further adieu, here’s the challenge question for 10/14/10 to 10/20/10!

Who holds the MLB record for most stolen bases in a career, with 1406?

David Price has a 19 / 6 regular season this year, with an ERA of 2.72. Pretty impressive! And Cliff Lee is certainly no slouch, with a 12 / 9 season and an ERA of 3.18.  No offense intended towards hitters like Carlos Pena and Vladimir Guerrero, but I’d sure love to see a pitcher’s battle tonight.

How are you doing with your picks? The Phillies performed exactly as I had expected, sweeping the Reds. And the Braves are hanging on, with a Game 3 win over the Giants, bring Atlanta to a series of 1 and 2, so I still have some hope left in that series!

Wait! With my original World Series pick, the Twins, already out of the running, does that mean I get a mulligan? It’s time to dust off my old Yankee hat? Fine by me… any other year and they would have been my choice in the first place! Darn it, Jim Thome.

This Week’s Trivia Question:

Who won the
NL Cy Young Award
in 1984?

Admittedly, in years past I have cheered on the New York Yankees in the postseason, however this year, I think I will change my tune.  (Sorry , Derek!) Here’s how my fantasy postseason will go…

American League: The Rays beat the Rangers and the Twins beat the Yankees, with the Twins finishing strong against the Rays and heading to the World Series.

National League: The Phillies beat the Reds and the Braves beat the Giants, with the Braves battling it out against the Phillies and ultimately advancing to the World Series.

The Twins win the World Series,  in 7 games, I might add.

Why do I want this? Jim Thome. There’s no other reason. I want to see him get a ring before he retires.  Don’t you love that guy? And I’d like to see Joe Mauer shine in the playoffs. Interesting story about this fabulous catcher… he was very fortunate to be signed by his hometown team, and thus, has had the support of his grandparents at every home game. How sweet is that!

Now Delmon Young, that’s another story. He proved to me what a jerk he is on August 17th, 2010, when he bull-dozed AJ Pierzynski! I guess the idiot has a bit of a temper … look at the video I found from 2009. Still, I can pick the Twins to win it all. Every family deserves a black sheep.

In an impressive 88-74 season, the White Sox had plenty of memorable moments.

How about Andruw Jones blasting his 400th career home run?

Or Juan Pierre leading the league with 68 stolen bases?

I could go on, but you get the idea… this year was really fun! Looking back at an old blog post from before the season started, I was whooping it up because Omar Vizquel had been signed. Not one to disappoint, Omar had a great year, and even Ozzie was quoted as saying he’d like to have this veteran back next year! In that post I was looking forward to watching Jake Peavy, too, so I hope we actually get a chance to see him next year. Gavin Floyd, too, I hope will be healthy and bringing his fantastic arm back to US Cellular Field.

So buck up, White Sox fans! As every Cub Fan is fond of saying, We’ll get ‘em next year!

The Flea’s Field Free Shipping Challenge!

You see, I was born into it. This photo was taken in 1965, (that’s my Dad). Notice the hat. My Dad, his Dad,   his 2 brothers, and the rest of our family were die-hard Packer fans. They had season tickets, and more than once I was allowed to tag along to a game in Milwaukee. It was great fun, and luckily, I was born into the age of Vince Lombardi! Can you even imagine a better time to cultivate a football fan?

So, before I go spouting off stats to back up my position, I’d like to tell you about a couple of my Bears fan friends. You see, not all Bears fans are spiteful towards Packer Backers… just a few! I think these guys represent the majority of Bears fans, who are basically football fans, at heart. Take my friend Skip, a seasoned Bears ticket holder, who wears his Dick Butkus jersey to nearly every Chicago home game. Skip has 4 seats, about 4 rows back,  on the 25 yard line at Soldier Field. In 2006, expecting Brett Favre to announce his retirement, Skip invited me and another Packers fan to accompany him to the game. That day we were 2 Bears fans and 2 Packers fans, in full team attire, and we merely shared the excitement of the game and the company of good friends. We even got interviewed by the Chicago Tribune, who’s reporter marveled at the camaraderie he saw between fans that day. (Brett did announce his retirement that day… little did we all know what a circus that would become, but that’s another blog entirely!) My point? In Skip’s words, “How can you not respect the career that Brett Favre has had? Of course I like him, just not when he’s playing my team!”

Then there’s John, another die-hard Bears season ticket holder. I accompanied John to my first Bears game, although it was not against the Packers. John is a tail-gater, and let me tell you, I was treated like royalty, had a feast that would contend with any brat-fest at Lambeau, and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. John’s downfall was that he liked to bet me, on every Bears / Packers game… this during the reign of Brett Favre! It started in the 1996-97 season, when the Packers went on to win the Superbowl. I lost only 2 times in 8 years and the really funny part is when he decided to stop losing to me, the Bears won again! In the meantime, John good-heartedly lost money, drinks, dinner, and evenings where he had to wear Packers jerseys and sing my favorite Packers song, That’s Why I Love My Green Bay Packers!

Now, for the numbers. While both teams have a long and rich history, filled with legendary coaches, quarterbacks and players, the Packers still come out on top…  a needless justification for my unbreakable Packer Pride!

Yes, the Packers won the First Superbowl, played in 1967. Did you know that the Superbowl got it’s name from Kansas City Chiefs owner, Lamar Hunt? I read an interesting article on About.com, describing how Hunt was watching his daughter play with her Super Ball, and he jokingly suggested that the proposed interleague championship be named the Superbowl. The first 3 games were titled “World Championship Game”, but soon thereafter, the game was retroactively and officially labeled “Superbowl”.

Including that fateful first game in 1967, here are some Bears vs Packers stats:

There’s some legends up there, aren’t there? On both sides.

I would talk about Quarterbacks, but cannot even find a list of all the qb’s that the Bears have enlisted… it’s too long! So I’ll just say these four names: Bart Starr, Lynn Dickey, Don Majkowski, and Brett Favre. It’s an impressive list, and I am already encouraged by what we’ve seen from Aaron Rodgers.

In fairness, let me mention some more Chicago greats, like Walter Payton and Gale Sayers, both Hall-of-Famers. And who can forget the famous Chicago Bears Superbowl Shuffle?

This football gal has a lot of respect for the Chicago Bears, but come Monday, I’ll be puttin’ on the cheese hat and deckin’ out in green and gold. It’s ok to be a Packer Fan in Chicago!
